Grain handling technology has come a long way since the Vegreville Seed Cleaning Plant Ltd. first opened in 1952. 🌾

So when the Plant Manager wanted to serve her customers better with upgrades, she knew she needed a company with extensive experience in the latest grain handling system technology.

That's why she called Nichols Electric. ⚡️

Read on to learn more about the facility upgrades, and what the Vegreville Seed Cleaning Plant is now able to do for you!

            Vegreville, Alberta

Waves of technological advancement continue to sweep industries across the globe, with no signs of slowing down. Efficiency is skyrocketing and hard work is being made easier.

But new technologies also mean staying competitive. Operations need to adapt and innovate to meet today’s growing expectations — and be at the forefront of the future.

Fortunately, agriculture is an industry rooted in adaptability. That’s why Jennifer Slasynski, Plant Manager of Vegreville Seed Cleaning Plant, decided to make critical facility upgrades to serve local farmers better. As someone ingrained in the ag industry, she knew the importance of finding an electrical company that truly understands farming, the requirements of grain handling systems and how to tailor technology to their operations.

l Alberta plant first opened as a wooden structure in 1952. A lot has changed in farming since the 50’s but Alberta still holds more than a quarter of Canada's field crop area, accounting for 27.6% of the national total. That’s a lot of seeds to sow and clean. And when you’ve been serving the local agricultural economy for 70 years, the need for expanding and enhancing operations is inevitable.

Today, the Vegreville Seeding Plant stands as a much larger facility just outside of town. Hundreds of farmers in the area visit regularly to clean their grain seed for the following year, and they’ve been reaping the benefits of Jennifer’s commitment to facility upgrades.

When Jennifer started as Plant Manager in 2021, she quickly identified the need to not only improve service to current customers, but to attract new ones. She’d sometimes see farmers driving right past her plant, going further down the road to seed cleaning facilities with the latest technological infrastructure. If farmers were willing to go the distance, Jennifer was too.

It was time to make the changes. And as Jennifer was shopping around for electrical services, she chose to put her trust in a company whose experience in agriculture and grain handling systems spoke for itself — a local electrical company called Nichols Electric.

With the help of the Nichols Electric team, many improvements have been made to the plant since, including accommodations for larger hauling trucks, installing an up-to-date debearder and a new elevator leg. Most recently, they installed a colour sorter equipped with cameras to separate seeds from contaminants using puffs of air. Now, farmers go home with higher quality seeds they can then better treat and reseed.

Success in agriculture means keeping an eye to the future. Jennifer hopes to increase seed cleaning capacity and speed in the coming years to further benefit her farmers. She looks forward to working with Nichols Electric to make those hopes into reality.

“We got a couple of quotes and Nichols’ pricing was competitive. But what set them apart for me was their experience in grain handling systems. I knew I could trust their expertise to help us improve our systems and allow for growth in the future.”

There's nothing more Canadian than hockey, and Colin Grindle has taken that to a whole new level alongside country singer/songwriter Gord Bamford. Together, they own and manage the Camrose Crush, the newest NCHL senior AA semi-pro hockey team in central Alberta.

Everyone knows there’s nothing more Canadian than hockey. But the years of pandemic isolation have made it challenging for communities to cheer on their favourite local teams and to participate in this important Canadian pastime.

Today, hockey teams across the province are slowly starting to see their fan base return. And for folks in the Camrose area, the development of a new senior AA team has grown that spirit back with a vengeance, winning championships, breaking attendance records, and engaging the community on a whole new level.

Since then, the duo have elevated the Camrose Crush to incredible success, winning first place in the 2021-2022 North Central Hockey League (NCHL) championship, offering concerts before and after games, and filling the seats of the arena.

As they’ve grown, the team has been listening to their fans about what they want to see. So Colin and Gord decided to build the Crush Zone, a lounge area with a concession and bar.

Colin and Gord asked local vendors to support the build, and Sheldon Nichols was thrilled to accept. Nichols Electric provided pro-bono electrical work to get the Crush Zone up and running. Now, fans can enjoy food and beverages before, during and after the games, all while offsetting the cost of running the team.

Welcome to Newrosewan Grain Farm

The place where agricultural tradition meets innovation can be found on a work-in-progress grain farm near Camrose, Alberta. Introducing Steve Cowan, a lifelong farmer, professional agronomist, and manager of Newrosewan Farms!

Growing up on a dairy farm near New Norway, Steve Cowan of Newrosewan Grain Farm learned from experience what it takes to sustain a successful family operation. But he often found himself intrigued by the science behind agriculture. What soil properties are optimal for a high yield? What are the best ways to get the desired characteristics of certain crops? How can pests be safely and effectively managed?

After high school, Steve took these questions and many more to the University of Alberta where he pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture.

The combination of this practical and scientific knowledge has led Steve to where he is today — the owner and manager of Newrosewan Grain Farm and an Innovation Agronomist with

But when Steve needs electrical expertise — for his home, farm or a Crop Management Network project — he knows the local team he can count on. That’s why Nichols Electric was one of the first calls Steve made when he purchased new land to convert into a grain farm.

Steve and his family will be the first generation on this grain farm, but have big hopes for its handling capacity in the future. With agricultural technology like remote monitoring and automation evolving the farming landscape, Steve appreciates the thought and intention Nichols Electric put into ensuring he can continue growing his operations down the road.

With years of experience and knowledge in this area, Sheldon Nichols and his team went the extra mile to lay a scaleable electrical foundation. From farming to fatherhood, Steve’s hands are full. Nichols Electric is proud to give him one less thing to worry about, so he can keep focusing on his family and farm’s bright future.

“Everyone knows, if you want it done right, you call Nichols Electric. Everyone on that team does immaculate, high-quality work. And when you’re as busy as me, a full-time father, farmer and agronomist, I can trust the work is being done right. I don’t have to worry about anything.”

Unpredictable weather can make farming in Alberta uniquely challenging. Dylan Graff of Rosebriar farms decided this was the year he would take his crop yield out of mother nature's hands. That's when he called Sheldon Nichols.

Unpredictable weather can make farming in Alberta uniquely challenging. Just one early snowfall can devastate crops that farmers have worked all year to grow — putting their livelihood at risk.

No one knows this better than Dylan Graff of Rosebriar Farms. As a barley, wheat, canola and fava bean farmer, he and his family have been at the mercy of mother nature for many years.

But this year, Dylan decided he’d had enough. That’s when he called Sheldon, a fellow New Norwaian and respected local electrician, to find a solution.

Beginning work in mid-summer, Nichols Electric worked with

           Shift Innovations

to build Dylan a brand new bin yard on his 2800 acre family farm. What was once just a grass field is now a gravelled, concreted, and fully automated grain drying system that will not only save Dylan time, but also stress.

Dylan can now start harvest earlier, focus on combining and have peace of mind knowing that his product will get to market regardless of the weather.

Ultimately that means Dylan will have more time and energy to do what matters most — spending time with his wife and raising his little ones.

I want a little bit more of a fussy electrician on something like this. It’s not just running wire underground or pulling wire through a shop, there’s a lot to it. I knew Sheldon would be the guy for the job. Mother Nature can be cruel sometimes so I’m glad I can take things out of her hands for once.

For Scott Keller at Keller Farms, timing is everything during harvest season. Early snowfall can devastate a crop yield, so every year feels like a race against mother nature to get those grains harvested and into the dryer. Scott can’t control the weather, but he can avoid delays due to equipment breakdowns by working with reliable and efficient contractors like Nichols Electric.

The Kellers have been growing barley, fava, oats and other grains on their family farm for almost a century. The farm has been handed down five generations, and today, it’s in the caring and hardworking hands of Scott Keller.

Harvest season at the Keller farm usually begins in the last week of August and continues well into October. Scott’s father and a neighbour help out, but it’s always a roller coaster of emotions. With 2500 acres of grain to harvest and dry, they work hard to get the grain to the dryer before the first snowfall.

As a relatively small operation, Scott relies heavily on power to run his dryer during harvest. To this day, he uses an electrician he trusts — Sheldon Nichols at Nichols Electric. Both being from the small town of New Norway, they each take pride in supporting each other’s businesses. For Sheldon, that means ensuring Scott has reliable power, quick turnaround for replacement parts and cost-efficient upgrades.

You plant the seeds in the spring and you hope for the best. Then harvest starts and you start to see the fruits of your labour and it’s such a huge relief. Snow and unexpected breakdowns bring stress and anxiety, and since I can control only one of those, it’s important to have good relationships with companies that are reliable. I’m happy to have that with Nichols Electric.

Darryl and Sheldon Nichols, Founder and CEO of Nichols Electric, started working together a few years ago on electrical projects that were crucial to the operation.

“[Nichols Electric] are the only guys we’ll use now going forward in our building,” Darryl says. We’ve worked with a lot of electricians over the years and Nichols Electric is by far the best.”

A while back, Darryl and his team realized there were electrical problems with a shipping dock, causing a number of operational headaches. Over the years, he brought in one electrician after another to look at it but none of them could figure out the problem. Sheldon and his team at Nichols Electric came in, assessed the dock, found the problem and fixed it with no issues.

“It’s been working perfectly ever since. They just get the work done, which is important from a facility perspective because there’s so much going on. I highly recommend Nichols Electric to anyone who’s looking for a commercial electrician!”

Talk of the Trade: Sheldon Nichols

Spring had sprung, and a light at the end of the long dark pandemic tunnel was finally becoming visible. Over the last six months, that feeling of change has endured, but in new and exciting ways. The last time we Q&A’d with Sheldon Nichols, Founder and CEO of Nichols Electric, change was in the air. Spring had sprung, and a light at the end of the long dark pandemic tunnel was finally becoming visible.

Over the last six months, that feeling of change has endured, but in new and exciting ways. The Nichols Electric team has been focusing on growth of the business, seizing critical opportunities to embrace new technology, take on more complex projects, and strengthen relationships. And we’re proud to say the hard work has been paying off.

Here’s what Sheldon had to say about this pivotal moment in Nichols Electric’s story.

Since our last Q&A, how have you grown professionally, and what does that growth mean to you?

I’ve always felt that if you’re not progressing in life, you’re going backwards — and I think that applied to business too. I’m happy to report that since the last Q&A, Nichols Electric has seen a massive shift. Whereas before we were only working in the field, we’re now also focusing on growing and developing the business. We took a deep dive into the structure and processes of the organization recently that revealed new ways we could improve service, create efficiencies and scale the business. I’m really proud of how far we’ve come.

What’s one of your favourite projects the Nichols Electric team has worked on? What makes it stand out for you?

That’s a hard question, because there are so many. But if I have to choose, our larger scale industrial and automation projects stand out the most. They tend to be multi-faceted, involve many different players, and require more planning beforehand — all of which makes them different from other projects. The deadlines are usually tight too. We don’t want our clients to have more downtime than they planned, so that adds a level of excitement and accomplishment when we hit the mark. And as a business owner, seeing how much my team members grow after each of these projects, both personally and professionally, is really fulfilling.

What do you enjoy most about being an electrician?

Like many others, the electrical sector is rapidly changing with continuous advancements in technology. Every day it seems like there’s a new tool or way of working that increases efficiency, like artificial intelligence for example. But this is what makes our trade extremely enjoyable and exciting. There are constantly opportunities to innovate, learn and try new things.

Are there any local Camrose businesses, organizations or events that you’d like to give a shoutout too? What do they bring to the community?

I’d personally like to give a shout out to a few great people at the Camrose RONA: Dave Kowal, General Manager, and Brian Schuster and Gerald McGill at the contractors desk. They’ve consistently provided excellent service to us for over 15 years. Not only are they always willing to help, but they’re always up for a few friendly jabs and a good laugh.

How will you be spending your time outside of work this summer?

Our biggest summer plan is actually a week-long road trip touring the northern United States. With backpacks and hiking poles in hand, we’re looking forward to getting some fresh air, decompressing, and putting on some foot miles in the beautiful wilderness.

Talk of the Trade: Branden Kontek

Branden told us a little bit about himself and his journey via Q&A last spring. Many things have stayed the same for him since then, but a lot has changed too! We caught up with Branden again this summer to learn how he’s grown as an electrician and what he loves about his work.

Last spring, Branden told us a bit about himself and his journey to becoming an electrician. We learned that he enjoys the outdoors, fishing, camping, and spending time with his dog in the central Alberta countryside. We also learned that once Branden started as an apprentice with Nichols Electric years ago, he knew he’d found his calling and his crew.

Much of this remains the same for Branden six months later, (including his favourite local watering hole!) but he’s also had a big year professionally and personally.

I’m proud to say that I’ve met two big milestones since our last Q&A. I purchased my first home last winter, right before going back for my final year of electrical schooling. Then in March, I took the Red Seal exam and received a high grade. So I’m now a certified Electrician Journeyman! It feels really good to meet both of these milestones so close together — and both at the age of 22.

I’m also looking forward to seeing how the renewable energy sector progresses over the next few years. There’s been a push to move away from non-renewable sources of energy, so it’ll be exciting to see what that looks like.

Bryce told us a little bit about himself and his journey via Q&A last spring. Many things have stayed the same for him since then, but a lot has changed too! We caught up with Bryce again this summer to learn how he’s grown as an electrician and what he loves about his work.

Last March, Bryce told us a little bit about himself and his journey to becoming an electrician with Nichols Electric via Q&A. We learned that he’s always wanted to work in the trades, he loves living in Camrose and he enjoys working with his hands.

Many things have stayed the same for Bryce since then, but a lot has also changed (including a new baby on the way!) so we caught up with him again this summer.

Since our last Q&A, how have you grown professionally and what does that growth mean to you?

Since then, I feel like I’ve become more self-assured at work. Working on more complex projects and figuring out ways to complete them has improved my confidence.

My favourite project that we’ve worked on recently is the Onoway Crop Management job. It’s the biggest project we’ve completed in a few years, and it was nice to have my hands on every aspect of the project — from start to finish.

What I enjoy most is finishing up a project, and the feeling I get when everything works. As for day-to-day tasks, I enjoy lighting. Whether it’s troubleshooting lights, replacing old lights or adding new ones, lighting always seems to make my day brighter.

Local partners join Nichols Electric on a fertilizer facility upgrade in Onoway, Alberta

Nichols Electric teamed up with Crop Management Network Inc. and several local partners to replace the electrical of an old fertilizer facility in central Alberta. There were challenges and triumphs on the project, but after just two months, the facility is now a state-of-the-art fertilizer plant that will support farmers for years to come!

purchased an old fertilizer facility in Onoway, a small town northwest of Edmonton. The job? To transform the outdated plant into a modern, state of the art fertilizer facility that improved CMN’s service to central Alberta farmers.

Craig Solberg, Account Manager with CMN was put in charge of the project. “I prioritized some projects that I felt needed to be done for this business to be sustainable long term. So the top priority was to improve the quality and capacity of our dry fertilizer system.” Craig says. The second was to add an additional blender.

That’s when Nichols Electric was brought on board. With their expertise and history of great work with CMN, they were the perfect fit to lead the upgrade.

After Craig met with Sheldon, Founder and CEO of Nichols Electric, the team went straight to work. They did an inventory of the current electrical service, brought on the partners needed, removed and replaced old equipment, and even put in new cabling and tray — all in two months.

It’s easy to underestimate how many specialized teams are needed for a project like this. Upgrading some electrical sounds pretty straightforward, right? In reality, many hands were needed on deck, from programming to welding to supplies to underground work.

But Sheldon doesn’t trust the work with just anyone. Over the years he’s aligned Nichols Electric with local businesses that value hard work, diligence and service excellence as much as he does. Shift Innovations is one of those businesses, and their President, Darren Bolding, sees partnerships the same way.

I typically wouldn't work with another electrical contractor. But when I see the quality of work [Sheldon] does, it's similar quality of work that we do. We trust that whoever's doing the job is doing it the way we'd like it to be done. We're much stronger when we work together."

           Challenges and triumphs

With any project of this scale, there are always challenges. The facility upgrade in Onoway was no exception.

The crew was faced with a major hurdle — one of the transformers was faulty, putting out an unbalanced voltage that would shorten the equipment's lifespan. Sheldon knew that fixing it would take some time, but because he guarantees the highest possible standard, he couldn't allow a piece of equipment to operate imperfectly. Nichols Electric worked alongside EQUS to rebalance the voltage, get the equipment running properly and the project back on track.

One of the big successes of the project was replacing the old manual controls and adding a modern operating system. Darren and the team at Shift Innovations worked hard to create custom systems using the latest, most efficient technology. This upgrade means CMN can have Nichols Electric access the plant remotely to troubleshoot system issues, saving time and money.

Jennifer and Eddie, hardworking parents and small business owners in Edmonton, needed a space in their home to decompress, but their undeveloped basement wasn't very calm-inspiring. That is, until it was completely renovated with the help of Nichols Electric.

Owning and operating a small business, growing your family and tackling a renovation may sound like an intimidating checklist, but Jennifer Sired is ticking off the boxes at an impressive rate.

Jennifer is the owner of Castledowns Animal Hospital in Edmonton, working alongside her husband and fellow veterinarian Eddie Rasmussen. Being an advocate for animals is fulfilling, but the pressure can also take a toll. Having a space to relax and decompress in helps Jennifer and Eddie be at their best for their furry patients.

And their undeveloped basement wasn’t a very calm-inspiring space. After more than five years in their home, it was time to tackle a full renovation. That’s when they called us. We were proud to take some pressure off their shoulders and provide them with the power to continue growing in their home. Because everyone needs a sanctuary.

Jennifer says they’re looking forward to future renovations but, at the moment, they have their hands full with their most exciting undertaking yet — being first-time parents to their newborn son. They may have to wait just a little bit longer for that zen they were looking for.

“We purchased a house that had a totally undeveloped basement. We hired Sheldon and his crew to handle all of the electrical work — and we truly couldn’t have made a better decision. Sheldon was most generous with his time, making sure he understood our vision for the space. He’s absolutely an expert and we leaned on him heavily to provide us with an electrical layout that we’re thrilled with. He was always available for consultation and his crew were very punctual, professional and courteous. Every time we had another contractor or an inspector come in to view the site, they all raved about the electrical work that'd been done. All things considered, we’re thrilled with the final product and can say it was provided at a fair price point. We highly recommend Nichols Electric to anyone that’s planning an electrical project.”

Looking Forward: A Q&A with Sheldon Nichols

Sheldon Nichols, founder and CEO of Nichols Electric, sees the opportunity in 2022 and is looking forward to seizing it. We had a chance to chat with Sheldon about overcoming obstacles, continuing to grow and the exciting things on the horizon for Nichols Electric. Here's what he had to say.

"At the end of the day, our focus is bringing world-class products and services to our clients that will benefit them and make their daily operations more efficient and, ultimately, more enjoyable."

As the snows starts to melt and the thermometer slowly rises, there's that distinct feeling of renewal in the air. The possibilities of a new season — new growth waiting to sprout. Beginning the transition to spring isn't the only driver of this feeling. For the past couple of years, we've had to adapt to an unfamiliar environment and overcome new challenges.

The start of 2022 brought with it a sense of hopefulness. Maybe a return to normal is around the corner, but what's for certain is there's opportunity. Opportunity to learn and grow from our experiences.

Sheldon Nichols, founder and CEO of Nichols Electric, sees that opportunity and is looking forward to seizing it. We had a chance to chat with Sheldon about overcoming obstacles, continuing to grow and the exciting things on the horizon for Nichols Electric. Here's what he had to say.

It’s no secret that the pandemic has hit businesses hard, especially small local businesses. How have you continued to grow Nichols Electric during this time and who has helped you achieve this success?

Our team maintained constant communication about the situation and how we planned to manage the daily inconsistencies. When things were challenging, we had team discussions about how we'd navigate through it. We focused on taking every day one day at a time, instead of getting overwhelmed by looking at the situation as a whole. We’ve kept overhead low and remained flexible throughout the last two years allowing us to pivot, if needed.

And we’ve been diligent in building new relationships! We feel this is extremely important with clients, vendors and other high-level companies to leverage each others' experience and networks to help sustain everyone. This relationship building has been absolutely key to Nichols Electric’s growth.

Across industries, there's been a lot of talk around supply chain issues and volatile material costs. What challenges has Nichols Electric encountered and how have you navigated them?

Supply chain issues have caused a number of challenges both for us as company and for our clients.

From an owner's perspective, one of the biggest risks has been hedging and pre-buying non-returnable project specific inventory for potential projects — hoping the approvals move forward. But that's where those strong relationships with vendors and clients come in.

Now, clients also need to be pre-planning months — if not years — in advance, depending on the scale of their projects and their timelines. It's our job to communicate this, as well as explaining the need for upfront material costs in order to lock in pricing. For those on a builders’ mortgage or draw system this can be challenging.

You’re in the process of hiring, can you tell us what motivated you to expand your team? What benefits can your clients expect to see from your growing team?

Compared to the last couple years, there's a positive outlook for 2022. We’ve scheduled several projects and had multiple discussions with clients about projects on the horizon. The prospects for this season look promising, allowing us to continue to round out our team.

We’ve also built an extremely close-knit team over the last few years. We look out for and learn from one another. Everyone helps each other to advance their personal goals even outside of work — everything from advice to “spit balling” project ideas. As our team has grown and gained experience, I personally feel that we now have the ability to provide that type of growth and support to additional individuals.

One of the biggest benefits to our clients will be added service. With more team members in the field, we'll have the ability to help more people, even more immediately, if issues arise or new projects need to be completed. And it's always exciting to bring in new individuals with new ideas and concepts. It provides a fresh way of looking at things and strengthens the overall team as a whole.

Can you tell us a bit about your upcoming projects in 2022? What’s exciting about them?

We have some great agricultural projects in the works. With ever advancing technology, we’re now automating more systems and providing remote monitoring for end users — as well as for us from a service aspect. We set up remote monitoring on our larger scale sites, allowing us to diagnose system issues that may arise.

We’ve also started working across international borders with some US based companies. It’s always interesting and exciting to work with engineers and teams from other countries to see how they execute projects and what new technologies they bring to the table.

At the end of the day, our focus is bringing world-class products and services to our clients that will benefit them and make their daily operations more efficient and, ultimately, more enjoyable. When a number of these clients also happen to be our friends, neighbours and fellow local business owners, it’s exciting to see how the projects make their lives and livelihoods better.

           What's your secret for success?

In our 15 years as a company, our experience has grown significantly. We’ve learned that by taking a genuine personal interest in our clients and their needs, we can continue to survive and thrive as a company — even through hard times.

Lighting The Spaces You Love

Wendy Wenig, Camrose Design Consultant of Iconic Inspirations, explores the seven sources of light and the significant impact that each has on your home.

Exploring the seven sources of light

Making choices to complete your vision for a renovation or new build can be daunting to say the least. You want to have the look you’ve always dreamed of, but in many renovations, the budget becomes tighter than preferred before all the finishes can be installed. Sometimes, that means the sad choice to skimp on lighting is made. But you’re not alone — working with your lighting supplier and your designer can get you the best solutions available for your budget. That way, there’s less compromising on your vision and you’re able to experience the effects of quality lighting in your space.

One of the rules of thumb for designing interior spaces is providing seven sources of light within typical multi-use rooms like kitchens, dining rooms, living rooms, master bedrooms and family spaces. Here’s a breakdown of those seven sources of light:

Of course, daylight is the first light you’ll use in your space. Ideally, your architect has maximized the use of daylight planning in the positioning of your building plan on the land site.

General lighting comes next. Options for this include the traditional central lighting we see in all older homes, often excepting the living room. This type of lighting almost always spreads the lighting cone upwards to allow maximum viewing in the space, indirectly. In more recent times, cove lighting and low profile recessed LED pot lights are used to create general lighting. The number of pot lights are determined by the room's use and size.

A second layer of "ambient lighting" allows us to create moods within a room. Thats where layering recessed LEDs with chandeliers or pendants, or the above cove lighting, comes in to play. All the romance movies you see will use mood lighting in one way or another. Think of dimmer switches, remote controlled lamps and motorized drapes opening to reveal nightscapes of city lights with the moon and stars shining above.

Task lighting is pretty easy to understand, right? A reading nook, your piano, over the sink and stove, island pendants and desk lamps, are a few examples that spring to mind. You’ll find these often have a higher wattage to provide greater visibility. Most are directed downwards to focus or be aimed at the working surface. These can also be chosen for decorative reasons, so I always encourage choosing styles carefully to ensure the light actually provides for the need.

Another type of task lighting are those used for showing direction, safety and highlighting. These range from motion sensor security lights to hallway night lights. Style doesn't need to be ignored here either and even with low wattage, this lighting will make a significant difference.

Adding the next layer is the most fun — accents! Basic accents like art spotlights and sconces are easy additions with very specific destinations. Believe it or not, electric fireplaces are actually accent lighting. Imagine the stunning surprise of stars at night in your theatre spaces (fibre optics); waterproof, motion sensor controlled strip lighting inserted flush with your tile in the bathroom; under cabinet LED strips in the kitchen that can be installed at the floor, countertop or above the top level; artfully designed backlit fishtanks glowing from your master bedroom wall — the possibilities are endless! Even showers are being accented with multicoloured LED lighting, flowing as beautifully as the water they shine through.

The seventh layer of lighting is familiar, easy to implement and comforting — the simple candle. Whether you love the flickering of a genuine flame or the glow of the battery operated candles, the soft and symbolic sight of a candle imbues peace, love and hope that’s suitable for every space.

For everything but the candles, it’s important to have an experienced, qualified electrician on your design team. As a design consultant, I trust and appreciate the experience, guidance and friendly efficiency that Sheldon Nichols and his team provides. I’ve collaborated with Nichols Electric on some exciting projects to date and I anticipate many more in the future...

An Illuminating Q&A with Wendy Wenig of Iconic Inspirations

When Wendy Wenig, Camrose Design Consultant, takes on a project through her local business, Iconic Inspirations, she looks forward to integrating light for both purpose and for art. We asked Wendy to share some of her unique insights on the beauty of electricity in lighting. Here’s what she had to say.

I like to use art as light, and light as art, in surprising places.

When you think about an electrician, tool belts and ladders probably spring to mind. Yes, those are necessary components of almost any electrical project—but there’s a lot more to it. Lighting can be functional and beautiful at the same time. It has the power to transform any space.

And that’s why lighting plays such a key role in interior design. Wendy Wenig, Camrose Design Consultant, couldn’t agree more. When she takes on a project through her local business, Iconic Inspirations, she looks forward to integrating light for both purpose and for art.

After collaborating with Wendy on some great projects, we asked her to share some of her unique insights on the beauty of electricity in lighting. Here’s what she had to say:

How did you become a Design Consultant?

            WW:

In 2015, I graduated from design school in Vancouver. I came home determined to work as an independent, right off the bat. It was scary but I wanted to be an approachable designer. To me, that means spending the time clients actually need, especially those who have troubles making decisions. Not everybody can make a snap decision and be cool to go with it.

What’s the best part of the work you do?

            WW:

I love seeing spaces come together. Particularly, designing an environment that a family grows into. Creating those unique spaces with them means that they have their signature on it.

What role does lighting play in interior design?

            WW:

If you don’t have proper lighting, you don’t know what you really have. There are a lot of clichés, but it’s true — without light, you’re in the dark. As a designer, function has to come before form in all things. You have to take care of those kinds of things before the beauty of it. Because every client has their own unique needs when it comes to lighting, discussions include lifestyle, space usage and personal sensitivities.

Do you have any inspirations in how you approach lighting?

Yes! When I was in school, I learned about an artist and designer called Philippe Starck. He uses light in so many ways. He started with creating lamps and lamp shades. And the shades themselves were the art part. So when you put the light through the art, it just makes the space so dramatically different. It turns the fixture into a character in the room itself.

I like to use art as light, and light as art, in surprising places. Lighting is the equivalence of art and science working together—with people, who are the most individualistic creatures on earth.

Welcome to the Duggan family home.

When you build a custom home, you’re in uncharted territory. You can envision your ultimate destination but there’s a long road ahead. Pam and Joel Duggan travelled that road when they set out to build their dream home just outside of Camrose.

Any journey is made better with good company. We were happy to join the Duggans along the way and help them bring their vision to life. For Pam, that meant clean lines, modern fixtures and electrical that would last. We even added wiring for a hot tub and RV hook-up, additions Pam and Joel are looking forward to in the future.

Because the future comes fast. With the winding road of construction now in the rearview mirror, Pam’s turning her focus to all of the things that make a house a home — including expanding their deck for that hot tub.

We’re proudly providing the Duggans with the power to grow their vision for years to come.

A custom home is a lot different. You run into different challenges as you go because the house hasn't been built before. There are certain things that are overlooked in the planning stage and require changes on the fly. And that's exactly where Sheldon stands out. He's able to accommodate that and have the vision.

           Challenge:

CMN’s new location required a complete custom electrical system to meet the current and future operational needs of the site. An expedited timeline, vendor supply chain issues due to COVID-19 and the need for ongoing technical support, were key considerations in developing the system.

           Solution:

During the project planning and development stage, we placed strategic orders to ensure all necessary components arrived far in advance of construction. To complete the scope of work within tight timelines, we were extremely diligent in the timing and execution of our sub-contractors and the systematic completion of our own work.

, a local electrical and automation contractor, to collaborate on this project by developing a PLC/MCC (Programmable Logic Controller/Motor Control Centre) system and custom program to facilitate site operations. This system also allows our technicians to troubleshoot and diagnose system issues remotely or provide fast and local on-site support, if needed.

           Benefits:

Through the collaboration between Nichols Electric and Shift Innovations & Controls, CMN will find significant time and cost savings simply by eliminating the need for inefficient and expensive national/international technical support. All technical support is now locally-based and physically located within two hours of the site.

CMN’s new expansion in Mayerthorpe was not a small undertaking by any means. The crew at Nichols Electric completed it in a timely fashion and continue to follow-up, ensuring everything is running smoothly. Their hard work and dedication to the job is truly appreciated and shines through with all the jobs they’ve completed for us.

Teaming up with Sheldon and his crew on this project was a truly great experience. It’s nice to work with a team that has like-minded goals of achieving customer satisfaction, pride in their work and attention to detail in the quality of the product they deliver. Thanks to Nichols Electric for the opportunity to work together. Looking forward to more projects like this in the future!

John Flint contracted us to design and build a personalized agricultural solution for Dalrene Farms. There are a lot of uncertainties in agribusiness. One thing farmers shouldn’t have to worry about is power. John has a Black Angus herd and a family legacy to focus on. The Flint family has been farming in New Norway since 1905. Dalrene Farms began raising purebred Black Angus in 1932, making their herd one of the four oldest in Canada.

In 1976, John Flint took over the farm's operations. Dalrene Farms holds the moniker of both his grandfather and father’s middle name. John continues their farming legacy today, shipping Dalrene Angus all over the world.

John contracted us to design and build a personalized agricultural solution, including a dual source electrical system to power his grain drying and handling system via 3 phase generation and a 24-hour LED lighting system utilizing utility power. We built a custom NEMA 3R distribution system and control panel, as well as integrating WEG Motors and Controls throughout the project for peak efficiency and reliability.

This was quite an elaborate project, setting up this big dryer and lighting system. Nichols Electric did a tremendous job. I'd recommend them…We’re a farm but it was basically a commercial job. It was top notch and everything was right up to specs.

Nichols Electric Case Study: Completing Infrastructure Expansion of Former Pig Barn for New Lambing Facility

After the 2003 BSE crisis, Polson’s Farm diversified into raising sheep and found great demand. By 2012, they outgrew their space and moved their operations to a larger farm formerly utilized to raise pigs. They contracted Nichols Electric to develop an electrical design to accommodate the systems and equipment to meet their growing agricultural needs.

After the 2003 BSE crisis, Polson’s Farm diversified into raising sheep and found great demand. By 2012, they outgrew their space and moved their operations to a larger farm formerly utilized to raise pigs.

           Challenge:

Expanding an existing structure on the new property to accommodate a state-of-the-art lambing facility for their 2500 ewes. Nathanael Polson also wanted to keep in mind the continued growth of his operations and consider future expansions in our solution.

           Solution:

Initially, we conducted site reviews and discussed Nathaneal’s current and future expansion needs. We completed all required load calculations for the new infrastructure, verifying that the existing utility would sustain the added electrical demands. We then developed an electrical design to accommodate the systems and equipment to meet those needs.

           Benefits:

By working with the latest LED technology, we provided Polson’s Farm with a lighting system 50% more efficient in consumption versus its fluorescent counterparts. This resulted in both operating efficiency and energy cost savings.

Sheldon’s a guy I can always phone and he can give me an idea on how something should be executed or a component that I never knew existed. He keeps things efficient, cost effective and has a lot of experience with barn lighting and grain handling systems. And it's just nice to have him on speed dial if I have questions. I think you can't afford to be too prideful to ask questions when you're trying to grow. I didn't invent all this myself, I learned it from other people and I’ll pass it along to my kids.

Welcome to Polson's Farm

We’re proud to be Nathanael Polson’s first call when it comes to his farm’s electrical. He knows that we understand agriculture and that we keep up with the latest products and solutions, so that he doesn’t have to. We’re providing the Polson’s with the power to grow their flock today and for future generations to come.

In 2000, Nathanael Polson took over his family’s farm with the help of his wife, Christine, and their four children. The Polson’s were raising mainly cattle when the BSE crisis hit in 2003. Being a generational farmer, resiliency is in Nathanael’s blood. When you’re at the mercy of nature, you need to be adaptable.

And that’s just what the Polson’s did. They decided to diversify their livestock with sheep. Their flock grew quickly. By 2012, they outgrew their space and moved just east of Ponoka to expand their farm. Today, the Polson’s have 2500 ewes in their flock — and hope to grow to around 4000 in the next five years. This growth isn’t just for Nathanael and Christine; they’re creating a legacy for their children who just might follow in their farming footsteps.

That’s where we come in. We’re proud to be Nathanael’s first call when it comes to his farm’s electrical. He knows that we understand agriculture and that we keep up with the latest products and solutions, so that he doesn’t have to.
